Growing Spinach Next to Windows

Select a container that is at least 6 inches deep and has been cleaned with a mild detergent, rinsed and dried completely. Because spinach prefers a soil that is on the sandy side with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5, the use of a high-grade, organic potting mix for vegetables, which is readily available at garden centers and nurseries, is convenient. Sow the seeds according to the package directions, and cover them loosely with soil. Remember that containers are small relative to an outdoor garden bed and need to be watered more often. A basic water meter can be purchased to help you monitor the moisture in the soil. Once the seeds have sprouted -- in approximately seven to 14 days -- and are 1 inch in height, thin the crop by removing young plants to create 4 inches of space between each plant. (See References 3 and 6.)
