2012 All-Free Press baseball teams

First Team

C ? MATT SUGG

Ayden-Grifton / senior

Sugg hit .444 and drove in 22 runs to help the Chargers to the Carolina 1A Conference league title. An all-conference selection, Sugg also went 1-1 with fives saves on the mound.

P ? GARRETT BLACKBURN

South Lenoir / senior

Blackburn went 5-2 and posted a 1.54 ERA with 93 strikeouts. He also held opponents to a .129 average, added three saves and threw two no-hitters. Blackburn, named The Free Press? Pitcher of the Year, was an All-East Central 2A Conference pick.

INF ? MATT HINSON

Parrott Academy / senior

Hinson hit .344 with 27 RBIs and scored 19 runs as an infielder and went 7-2 with an area-best 1.43 ERA and 62 strikeouts on the mound in helping the Patriots complete an unbeaten run through the Eastern Plains Independent 2A Conference. Hinson had an on-base percentage of .411 and held opponents batting and on-base percentages to .213 and .271, respectively. Hinson was named the league?s player of the year and earned NCISAA 2A All-State honors.

INF ? WILL SUTTON

Jones Senior / senior

Sutton hit an area-best .531 with 26 RBIs, scored 22 runs and stole 24 bases for the Trojans. He also carried a 2.30 ERA on the mound and was an All-Coastal Plains 1A Conference selection for four years. Had a fielding percentage of .949.

INF ? GRANT TYNDALL

South Lenoir / junior

Tyndall hit .405 and drove in 19 runs, and stole a league-best 19 bases with an on-base percentage of .516. Was an All-East Central 2A Conference pick.

INF ? AUSTIN SMITH

South Lenoir / senior

Smith hit .412, drove in 29 runs and had nine doubles en route to all-conference honors. He also pitched in four games, faced 10 batters, allowed two hits and no earned runs.

OF ? CHASTIN RADFORD

North Lenoir / senior

Radford led the Hawks in every major offensive category with a .421 average, 21 RBIs, 31 runs scored and eight stolen bases, and led the area with five home runs. Not only was Radford named the area?s player of the year by The Free Press, he was also named the player of the year in the Eastern Carolina 3A Conference as voted on by its coaches. He also had three saves as a reliever.

Parrott Academy / senior

Hill hit .429 with 17 RBIs and scored 35 runs with an on-base percentage of .564. He won the Patriots? offensive award and was an All-Eastern Carolina 3A Conference pick.

OF ? TUCKER JONES

Greene Central / senior

Jones hit a team-best .361, drove in 17 runs and drew 18 walks on his way to a .500 on-base percentage. The All-Eastern Plains 2A Conference pick won the team?s silver slugger award with seven doubles.
