Does True Love Wait? Age of First Sexual Experience Predicts ...

? Sexual Health News ? Oct 17, 2012

It?s a common lament among parents: Kids are growing up too fast these days. Parents worry about their kids getting involved in all kinds of risky behavior, but they worry especially about their kids? forays into sexual relationships. And research suggests that there may be cause for concern, as timing of sexual development can have significant immediate consequences for adolescents? physical and mental health.

But what about long-term outcomes? How might early sexual initiation affect romantic relationships in adulthood?

Psychological scientist Paige Harden of the University of Texas at Austin wanted to investigate whether the timing of sexual initiation in adolescence might predict romantic outcomes ? such as whether people get married or live with their partners, how many romantic partners they?ve had, and whether they?re satisfied with their relationship ? later in adulthood.

To answer this question, Harden used data from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health to look at 1659 same-sex sibling pairs who were followed from adolescence (around 16) to young adulthood (around 29). Each sibling was classified as having an Early (younger than 15), On-Time (age 15-19), or Late (older than 19) first experience with sexual intercourse. Her findings are reported in a new research article published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

As expected, later timing of first sexual experience was associated with higher educational attainment and higher household income in adulthood when compared with the Early and On-Time groups. Individuals who had a later first sexual experience were also less likely to be married and they had fewer romantic partners in adulthood.

Among the participants who were married or living with a partner, later sexual initiation was associated with significantly lower levels of relationship dissatisfaction in adulthood. The association held up even after taking genetic and environmental factors into account and could not be explained by differences in adult educational attainment, income, or religiousness, or by adolescent differences in dating involvement, body mass index, or attractiveness.

These results suggest that the timing of first experience with sexual intercourse predicts the quality and stability of romantic relationships in young adulthood.

Although research has often focused on the consequences of early sexual activity, the Early and On-Time participants in this study were largely indistinguishable. The data suggest that early initiation is not a ?risk? factor so much as late initiation is a ?protective? factor in shaping romantic outcomes.

According to Harden, there are several possible mechanisms that might explain this relationship.

It?s possible, for example, that people who have their first sexual encounter later also have certain characteristics (e.g., secure attachment style) that have downstream effects on both sexual delay and on relationship quality. They could be pickier in choosing romantic and sexual partners, resulting in a reluctance to enter into intimate relationships unless they are very satisfying.

It?s also possible, however, that people who have their first sexual encounter later have different experiences, avoiding early encounters with relational aggression or victimization that would otherwise have detrimental effects on later romantic outcomes.

Finally, Harden explains that it?s possible that ?individuals who first navigate intimate relationships in young adulthood, after they have accrued cognitive and emotional maturity, may learn more effective relationship skills than individuals who first learn scripts for intimate relationships while they are still teenagers.?

Future research can help to tease apart which of these mechanisms may actually be at work in driving the association between timing of first sexual intercourse and later romantic outcomes.

In previous studies, Harden and her colleagues have found that earlier sexual intercourse isn?t always associated with negative outcomes. For example, using the same sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, she found that teenagers who experienced their first sexual intercourse earlier, particularly those who had sex in a romantic dating relationship, had lower levels of delinquent behavior problems. She explains, ?We are just beginning to understand how adolescents? sexual experiences influence their future development and relationships.?

The Flat Bench ?INCLINE? PRESS ? HOME CHEST WORKOUT ...

Last week I discussed one of the biggest home chest workout myths, the chest fly exercise! People do them thinking that they place an extra stretch on your chest which will allow you to build more chest muscle due to the stronger muscle contraction you can get versus a standard bench press.

This week I show you not only a better way to get a stronger contraction on your chest so you can get a better chest workout, but I show you the next biggest myth when it comes to chest training.

People think that without an incline bench you can?t develop your upper chest muscles. That couldn?t be further from the truth! With this one simple switch to the dumbbell bench press you?ll be able to develop a bigger upper chest quickly!

Turn exercises like the flat bench press into an upper chest builder with just a few quick and simple changes that you can do at home and start getting better results from your home chest workouts (and more) starting today!

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, dick clark productions and the NBC television network announced Monday that the pair of "30 Rock" and "Parks and Recreation" TV comedy stars have signed on to host the 70th annual Golden Globes ceremony after British comedian Ricky Gervais' three-year reign as the show's acerbic emcee.

"The unparalleled comedic timing of Tina and Amy will surely have viewers wanting to tune-in to see them in action," said Takla-O'Reilly, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which honors film and TV at the Beverly Hills Hilton ceremony. "The HFPA is thrilled to have the magnetic duo be a part of the show's 70th anniversary!"

The funny lady duo previously starred together in the films "Mean Girls" and "Baby Mama" and on "Saturday Night Live." They co-hosted the NBC sketch comedy series' "Weekend Update" satiric news segment from 2004 to 2006.

"Having both Tina?Fey and Amy Poehler on board to host this year's festivities is a major coup," said Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming at NBC. "Tina and Amy have a proven chemistry and comedic timing from their many years together on 'SNL' to their successful co-starring roles in 'Baby Mama.'"

Poehler's "Parks and Recreation" is currently in its fifth season on NBC, while Fey's "30 Rock" is airing its seventh and final season on the network.

This year's Golden Globes ceremony was watched by 16.8 million TV viewers, finishing within 1 percent of the 17 million viewers who tuned in to the 2011 broadcast, according to the Nielsen Co.

The Globes are usually handed out about a week before the Academy Award nominations are announced, but that won't be the case next year. The motion-picture academy has moved up the Oscar nominations announcement to Jan. 10 ? three days before the Globes are set to air Jan. 13. The earlier date for the nomination unveiling for the 85th annual Academy Awards, which will be hosted Feb. 24 by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, could steal attention away from the Globes.

China critic to sell Taiwan media holdings

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) ? A Hong Kong media magnate highly critical of China is selling one of his Taiwanese companies to a group headed by a local businessman whose family has substantial interests on the mainland.

The expected sale underscores growing Chinese influence on the island of 23 million people, especially in the free-wheeling media, where there is increasing soft-peddling of issues concerning China.

A source at Hong Kong-listed Next Media Ltd said Tuesday that Jimmy Lai would sell Next Media Entertainment Services Ltd. to a group headed by Jeffrey Koo Jr. for New Taiwan dollars 17.5 billion ($580 million).

The source spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss the deal.

The development comes on the heels of pro-China Taiwanese newspaper publisher Tsai Eng-meng's attempts to complete a $2.4 billion deal for a cable TV network system. Tsai's outspokenly pro-Beijing China Times newspaper balks at almost all direct criticism of the mainland. But even pro-opposition TV outlets sometimes dampen anti-China coverage amid efforts to complete potentially lucrative Chinese-language programming deals with Chinese media companies.

"Taiwanese news media have more or less imposed self-censorship on China criticism because many of their owners have either personal or company investments on the mainland," said Lo Chih-cheng, a political scientist at Taipei's Soochow University.

Next Media's stable in Taiwan comprises the highly profitable Apple Daily newspaper, Next magazine, a muckraking weekly often critical of Taiwan's China-friendly government, and an Internet TV station.

Despite selling Next Media to Koo, Lai will retain his flagship Hong Kong newspaper ? also called Apple Daily ? which regularly rattles Hong Kong's Beijing masters with its hard-hitting denunciations of communist rule.

Koo's father is the chairman of Chinatrust Financial Holding Co., which recently received approval to begin operations in China. The Koo family has a number of other business interests on the mainland, as do most of the island's leading families.

Taiwan split from the mainland amid civil war in 1949, and ever since has been waging a quiet battle to maintain its de facto independence in the face of unremitting efforts by Beijing to bring it back in the fold. However, President Ma Ying-jeou in the 4 ? years he has been in office has sought to tighten Taiwan's relationship with China, a policy strongly opposed by one of the island's three major newspapers and two of its eight cable TV stations.

Next Media's Apple, while critical of China has not been stridently opposed to Ma's policy and has largely been independent, although it focuses less on politics and more on tabloid-type news.

At the other end is Tsai's China Times newspaper, which openly supports Ma.

Tsai, whose China food business is the basis of a fortune recently estimated by Forbes Magazine at $8 billion, raised hackles earlier this year when he told the Washington Post that China's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters near Beijing's Tiananmen Square didn't produce anywhere near the number of casualties attributed to it in media reports, including those from Taiwan.

Today 40 percent of Taiwan's trade is with China and the mainland has attracted $140 billion in Taiwanese investments. An estimated 1 million Taiwanese live on the mainland, and more than 2 million Chinese tourists visit Taiwan annually.

iPad Mini to Launch on October 23

Apple will unveil the highly anticipated iPad Mini on Tuesday, October 23, according to a new report from the well-connected AllThingsD, in line with their previous report.

Citing sources, AllThingsD says the device will have a 7.85? display and use the new Lightning connector introduced with iPhone 5. It will also ?probably be thinner?, which sounds like reasonably obvious speculation. Little is really known about the iPad Mini and AllThingsD doesn?t provide many more details, but most rumors suggest the following may be true about the device:

A5X CPU
7.85? Display at 1024?768 (non-retina)
Significantly lighter than current iPad models
Aluminum chasis, similar to iPhone 5 and new iPod touch
Storage options ranging between 8GB to 64GB
Front FaceTime camera
LTE networking options
Priced between $199 and $399
Widespread availability in time for Holiday shopping season

The iPad Mini is intended to compete against the range of 7? Android tablets that are gaining popularity, and also fight the oncoming swath of Windows 8 tablets. Android competitors tend to be feature rich despite selling for low prices, including the Kindle Fire at $159 and Nexus 7 at $199. It?s unclear how Apple plans to price the iPad Mini given the iPod touch fills the $199-$399 range, but market expectations are for a competitively priced device.

Update: Reuters also confirms the October 23 date, saying the ?smaller iPad will directly compete with e-commerce giant Amazon?s Kindle Fire HD tablet and Google?s Nexus 7, both of which have 7-inch screens and are priced at $199.?

NHL, union might resume negotiations Tuesday

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly estimated the league lost $100 million from the cancellation of the preseason.

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

Labor negotiations between the NHL and the locked-out players' association may resume Tuesday after a four-day break.

The location and the agenda have yet to be determined. The sides held two days of talks this week in New York without discussion of hockey-related revenue - the core economic issue that has prevented the NHL regular season from starting on time.

"Nothing firm. There is a potential for Tuesday,'' NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an email to The Associated Press.

The 28-day lockout has already wiped out the entire preseason and the first three days of the regular season. The NHL announced last week that all games have been canceled through Oct. 24.

A deal will have to be struck soon to prevent more cancellations and provide an opportunity to make up the lost games and have a full 82-game season.

The sides finished two days of negotiations Thursday that again centered on secondary issues such as drug testing instead of focusing on how to divide up revenue.

The league and the union did little to close the gap, and the likelihood of any hockey being played in October is quickly fading. After five hours of talks at the league office on Wednesday, the sides got back together for nearly as long - in two sessions - on Thursday.

Daly estimated the NHL lost $100 million from the cancellation of the entire preseason and would be out another $140 million to $150 million with the regular-season losses.

The NHL still says it is waiting for a new proposal from the union, with the owners adamant players accept a significant drop from the 57 percent of revenue they received under the salary cap in the last contract. The players don't want what they consider more massive cuts at a time when the overall revenue pot reached record numbers ($3.3 billion) last year.

Gautam Gambhir rues KKR?s poor batting performance ? Cricket News Update

Kolkata Knight Riders? skipper Gautam Gambhir expressed his disappointment with his side?s poor batting performance in their first Champions League Twenty20 match at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on October 13, which saw them losing to the Delhi Daredevils by a margin of 52 runs.

?We played every badly and it was an embarrassing batting performance from us,? he said after the conclusion of the match. ?But it is long way to go. We have the talent and we will come back into the tournament.

?... these things happen,? he continued. ?Sometimes you can't hold on to the momentum. It was a good wicket. One of us had to bat through. If one of our top four got 70, we would have won.?

The KKR, champions of this year?s edition of the Indian Premier League, faced off against the Delhi Daredevils, who came third in the same tournament. The team won the toss and elected to field first, with the bowlers ? among them Sunil Narine (4-0-21-3) and Lakshmipathy Balaji (4-0-61-2) ? putting forth a lukewarm performance, which saw the Daredevils posting a final target of 160 by the end of 20 overs.

While the target appeared more than achievable, however, the KKR crashed spectacularly when they stepped up to the crease for their turn at bat.? The Daredevils? Irfan Pathan (4-0-19-2), Morne Morkel (4-1-25-2), and Umesh Yadav (4-0-13-2) went on a rampage, completely demolishing the Knight Riders? top order.

?Credit to Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel, and all Delhi fast bowlers. They bowled really well,? Gambhir admitted after the match.

Pathan swept both KKR openers ? wicketkeeper batsman Manvinder Bisla (1) and skipper Gambhir (0) ? off the crease in the very first over, and Morkel followed up with the wicket of veteran batsman Brendon McCullum (0) in the very next over. Jacques Kallis retired hurt on duck, and that took care of the Knight Riders? top order.

Manoj Tiwary top-scored for the team with 33, but the remainder of the batting order failed to make any significant efforts, and the KKR collapsed at 108, with 7 wickets down, by the end of 20 overs.
