Controversial Arizona lawman targeted by credit card scam

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A controversial Arizona lawman, who styles himself "America's Toughest Sheriff" for his relentless pursuit of criminals, said on Tuesday that he has himself become a victim of credit card fraud.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his credit card information had been used to buy $291 in groceries in Chicago - a city he said he had not visited in years.

A controversial figure for housing county detainees in a Spartan "Tent City" jail and for sweeps targeting illegal immigrants across metro Phoenix, Arpaio said fraudsters used his Discover card last week to shop at a Jewel supermarket in the city.

"I haven't been to Chicago since I was a young federal narcotics agent in 1957 ... so I sure couldn't have been buying groceries in that supermarket," Arpaio told Reuters, adding: "This seems to be a widespread problem across our nation."

He said he was alerted to the scam by Discover, and that no arrests had been made.

Bank card fraud is on the rise worldwide. One international study published last year found more than a quarter of consumers reported having been hit by scammers in the previous five years.

Local CBS affiliate KPHO Phoenix reported Arpaio would consider not pressing charges if the perpetrator was struggling, although he said later he had concluded that an organized gang was likely responsible.

"I was just saying 'Jesus, some poor guy in Chicago stole my card number and he had to feed his kids and they had no food' ... but no, this was like an organized effort and whoever's doing this should go to jail for 100 years," he said.

Arpaio was swept to a sixth term in office in November by supporters of his hardline stance on crime and illegal immigration in the Phoenix area. He is also fighting lawsuits from the government and Hispanic drivers who accuse him of civil rights violations and racial profiling, which he denies.

Three Pennsylvania classmates get perfect SAT scores

Three students from Upper Dublin High School in Montgomery County, Penn., all scored a perfect score of 2400 on their SATs.

Three students from Montgomery County, Pa., accomplished something extremely rare -- they all scored a perfect score of 2400 on their SAT.

And what's even more rare is that all three students are classmates at the same school.

The Upper Dublin High School juniors dedicated years, studying for this one test.

Julie Baldassano, 17, who is the youngest in her family, says her two big brothers left some intimidating shoes to fill, because they both scored 2380 when they took the SAT. She says she couldn't wait to tell them about her perfect score. "They said 'congrats,' yeah, it felt great to be able to tell them."

Benjamin She, 16, says the test is all about skill. "Taking a standardized test like the SAT is just like doing a skill like Poker, it's all about what you need to do to analyze the questions."

According to the College Board, more than one million students take the SAT each year. Last year, only 360 students got a perfect score.

These three students share another thing in common-- they were surprised when they saw the 2400.

"It's really exciting and I never expected it," said William Raynor, 16, who is the oldest in his family.

For other students who stress when it comes time to take the SAT, these perfect test takers say practice and dedication really do make all the difference.

"Don't get discouraged, I wasn't getting anywhere near 2400 when I started practicing, but the more you do the better it'll go and the easier it will get," said Baldassano, who added that besides academics, they all have other interests.

Baldassano likes to knit and volunteers at an animal shelter. She combines her two passions by selling knitted hats to her friends for $10 each, and donates that money to the shelter. So far, she's raised $4,000 for the cause she's passionate about and says she is considering veterinary medicine for her future.

Benjamin She is also considering a future in medicine, and has a passion for classical music. He plays violin in a youth orchestra in Philadelphia. On Sundays, he teaches English at a Chinese school for the elderly.

Raynor volunteers at a library and plays viola in the same youth orchestra as She. He also competes in the science olympiad, math team and science fair and is looking to study medicine as well.

"You can find time to study and do well academically while still having other passions," said Baldassano.

Officials urge residents to keep a close eye on their pets during coyote mating season.

Northern Illinois residents may witness an increase in coyote sightings over the next few months.

The village of Wheaton issued an alert this week warning residents of an influx of coyotes during their mating season, which can last through April.

The alert encouraged residents, especially pet owners, to eliminate outdoor food sources such as accessible garbage or pet food because coyotes are creatures of habit and will return to areas where they are successful.

Although pets are not a main part of a coyote's diet, pet owners should keep a watchful eye on their animals as coyotes will often go for easy prey, the alert said.

Coyotes tend to feed during daytime hours in the winter months since they often struggle to find an adequate food source, according to Naperville Animal Control.

Those who see a coyote should attempt a "hazing" technique , which includes making loud noises or threatening gestures, the alert said.

The alert comes after a number of recent coyote attacks on dogs in the Chicago area.

Coyote sightings should be reported to town officials to help alert residents and prevent future attacks.

? ? ?Here we've always put them in the front hall closet on the shelf. I've never liked this location. The kids can't access them there and I'm forever up on a bar stool to get down just the right one hoping that an avalanche of games doesn't descend upon me!

? ? ?Because we've maxed out our space here another alternative wasn't available until we began to make a few changes in the living room. I'm not ready to show you all of the changes yet {and quite honestly there's still more to do} but I did want to show you what we came up with.

Arab-American groups say Coke ad is racist

Arab-American groups have sharply criticized a Coca-Cola Super Bowl ad depicting an Arab walking through the desert with a camel, and one group said it would ask the beverage giant to change it before CBS airs the game on Sunday before an expected audience of more than 100 million U.S. viewers.?

"Why is it that Arabs are always shown as either oil-rich sheiks, terrorists, or belly dancers?" said Warren David, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, or ADC.?

Coca-Cola released an online teaser of the commercial last week, showing the Arab walking through a desert. He soon sees cowboys, Las Vegas showgirls and a motley crew fashioned after the marauders of the apocalyptic "Mad Max" film race by him to reach a gigantic bottle of Coke.?

In its ad, Coke asks viewers to vote online on which characters should win the race. The online site does not allow a vote for the Arab character.?

"The Coke commercial for the Super Bowl is racist, portraying Arabs as backward and foolish Camel Jockeys, and they have no chance to win in the world," Imam Ali Siddiqui, president of the Muslim Institute for Interfaith Studies, said in an email.?

On Thursday,?Coca-Cola said it held what it described as a "productive conversation" with the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, in which it apologized and explained that it did not mean the ad to be derogatory. It also said that it didn't plan to change the commercial.

"We did express regret that the ad had been misunderstood," Coca-Cola spokeswoman Lauren Thompson told Reuters?in an email. "We are very concerned by these allegations and in no way is our ad meant to be derogatory to any group."?

The committee said it was pleased with the company's apology and explanation.

Ronald Goodstein, professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, said he was surprised by the image as well. "If Coke's vision is to be an arm's distance away from every customer, why would they want to offend the Arab world?" said Goodstein.?

Abed Ayoub, director of legal and policy affairs for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, said the commercial could harm Coke's business with the Arab community.?

"Coke should understand and respect their consumers and have a better understanding of the market they are sharing," he said.

The company has a large market share in the Middle East and North Africa, he noted, and many convenience stores and other retail outlets in the United States that offer Coke are owned by Arab-Americans.?

Documentary Aims to Make Programming Cool ? Computing ...

Code.org is aimed at making programming cool, and they?re going to do it with a documentary:

Code.org?s initial effort will be a short film, currently being edited, that will feature various luminaries from the technology industry talking about how exciting and accessible programming is. Two of the most famous programmers and entrepreneurs in history ? Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Facebook, and Bill Gates, the chairman and co-founder of Microsoft ? were among the people interviewed for the film, according to a person with knowledge of the project who wasn?t authorized to discuss details about it.

Lesley Chilcott, a producer of the documentaries ?Waiting for ?Superman?? and ?An Inconvenient Truth,? is making the film.

Rampaging monkeys injure 7

MAKASSAR, Indonesia -- A mob of wild monkeys has gone on a rampage in a village in eastern Indonesia, entering houses and attacking residents, injuring seven people.

One of the victims was listed in critical condition.

Ambo Ella, a spokesman for Sidendeng Rappang District in South Sulawesi province, says the surprise attack by about 10 monkeys happened in Toddang Pulu village.

He said late Wednesday that a 16-year-old boy was badly bitten in Monday?s attack and is being treated at the hospital.

He believes the troop came from a nearby forest protected by a local tribe.

It is unclear why the monkeys, which are usually afraid of humans and flee when they hear human voices, emerged and attacked.

Local authorities are investigating to find out what prompted the attack, which caused panic among villagers.
