Rio employees accused of stealing London documents

LONDON (AP) ? In an embarrassing episode for the host of the next Summer Olympics, several employees of Rio de Janeiro's 2016 committee were caught stealing files from British organizers during the London Games.

London's organizing committee said Friday that Rio employees, working alongside London staff in the technology department, had downloaded internal documents without authorization. The Brazilians were working with London organizers during the July 27-Aug. 12 games as part of an official "transfer of knowledge program" between Olympic host cities.

"I can confirm there was an incident involving members of the Rio team who accessed and removed files without permission," London spokeswoman Jackie Brock-Doyle told The Associated Press. "We reported it to Rio management. They acted quickly to resolve the issue and return the files."

The Rio employees involved in the theft were removed from the London program.

The nature and content of the London files was not immediately known. However, officials said the documents likely would have been provided to the Rio team had they requested them.

Top-level London officials were notified and informed Rio organizers, headed by Carlos Nuzman and Leo Gryner.

Nine Rio employees were fired for the incident, according to a report by Brazilian journalist Juca Kfouri at the UOL.com web portal. Kfouri is also a columnist at the Fohla de S. Paulo newspaper, Brazil's largest. His report said the London files included information about strategic planning and security.

Brock-Doyle said she couldn't confirm whether, or how many, Rio employees were fired. Messages and calls to the Rio organizing committee in Brazil were not immediately answered.

"It's an issue between Rio and London which they have dealt with," International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams told the AP.

Rio, the first city in South America chosen to host the Olympics, sent hundreds of staff to London during the games to monitor the operations.

Disclosure of the stolen files comes two months before London and Rio officials gather in Brazil for the official "debrief" of the 2012 Games, a meeting where previous organizers provide the next hosts with information for staging the event.

Ten new charges sought against accused Colorado gunman: report

DENVER (Reuters) - Prosecutors have filed a motion to add 10 new charges against accused Colorado gunman James Holmes, arrested following the July movie theater shootings that killed 12 people, and have asked to amend 17 others, the Denver Post reported on Wednesday.

The judge in the case has ordered nearly all court filings be sealed, and it was not clear what the additional charges were from a register of court actions, the Denver Post reported.

Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, is accused of opening fire on July 20 at a midnight screening of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, a Denver suburb. Twelve people were killed and 58 were wounded in the attack.

A court official declined to confirm the report of the additional charges.

Holmes, 24, already faces 24 counts of first-degree murder and 116 counts of attempted murder. Under Colorado law, the doubling of charges allows prosecutors to have two pathways to secure a conviction.

The newspaper noted that a separate motion was filed to amend 16 counts of attempted murder and one count of crime-of-violence sentence enhancement against Holmes, although it did not reveal how they would be amended.

Prosecutor Rich Orman said at a hearing last month that Holmes bought a ticket to the midnight screening, then left the theater through an exit door that propped open on his way out.

Holmes then put on a gas mask and ballistic protective gear before returning to the theater and spraying the crowd with gunfire, Orman said.

Wednesday's developments came a day before the scheduled continuation of a hearing on whether a parcel Holmes sent to University of Colorado psychiatrist Lynne Fenton falls under patient-doctor privilege.

Fenton testified at an earlier hearing that she treated Holmes more than a month before the rampage, but that their professional relationship had ended well before he mailed the package to her a day before the massacre.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - Former Tennessee walking horse hall of fame trainer Jackie McConnell was fined $75,000 and sentenced to three years probation in federal court on Tuesday for using a banned and abusive practice on show horses that was caught on video.

McConnell faced 52 counts of transporting and showing abused horses and had pleaded guilty in May to a single charge of animal cruelty in an agreement with prosecutors that called for probation and a fine.

U.S. District Judge Harry Mattice Jr. accepted McConnell's plea, imposing the fine, which could have been up to $250,000, and probation at a federal court hearing in Chattanooga on Tuesday. McConnell faced up to five years in prison if the agreement had not been accepted.

McConnell was banned for life from the Tennessee Walking Horse organization's biggest event and stricken from its hall of fame along with written and photographic mentions after ABC News showed the video in May of him abusing horses.

The federal charges stemmed from a banned practice called "soring" in which the front legs of walking horses, known for their high-stepping gait, are slathered with caustic chemicals to induce pain that causes them to kick even higher.

An animal rights activist working undercover in a horse barn secretly recorded McConnell and some colleagues abusing horses in March and April 2011. The video was used as a basis for the prosecution and shown by ABC more than a year later in May 2012.

The video showed horses being beaten with wooden sticks and poked with electric cattle prods. The horses' ankles were covered with caustic chemicals and then wrapped with plastic to increase their pain.

Keith Dane, director of equine protection for the Humane Society of the United States, said he wanted a tougher sentence but that McConnell's case still would send a message that soring would not be tolerated.

"It was our hope that McConnell would do prison time for these terrible crimes but there are gaps in the federal law that need to be strengthened," Dane said.

Two other men pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in the case and were sentenced to probation as well.
