Workshop on Community Radio Held

Delegates from ten dioceses attended a three-day workshop on Community Radio organized by the Catholic Bishops? Conference of India Office for Social Communications (CBCI-OSC) December 10-12. The programme was held at Dwaraka, Mananthawady, the headquarters of Radio Mattoli, the first Community Radio in Kerala and an initiative of the diocese of Mananthavady. The workshop included sessions, spot visits and interaction with the management and staff, programme producers and listeners. The participants shared the prospects of establishing Community Radio stations in their own respective dioceses.
Inaugurating the workshop Bishop Jose Porunnedom of Mananthavady urged the importance of adopting modern communication methods if the church is to proclaim the Gospel message effectively. He highlighted the popularity of radio as a medium of communication and said today radio sets are being fitted into fridges, microwaves, cars, mobile phones and other instruments. Radio offers us the possibility to reach the maximum number of people with less costs and resources, he said.
Bishop Porunnedom said he was inspired by the CBCI General Body meeting in Trichur in 2006 which called for the Church in India to take communication seriously. Established in 2009 under the aegis of the Wayanad Social Service Society, Radio Mattoli broadcasts programmes daily from 6 a.m. to 10.pm. In the predominantly tribal district of Waynad, Radio Mattoli is listened to by more than 6.5 lakh people.
Station Director Fr Thomas Joseph Therakam said said the programme content of Radio Mattoli focuses on themes like agriculture, marketing, rural and tribal welfare, domestic issues, women empowerment and leadership, education and entrepreneurship and host of other social and development issues. During an interactive session with listeners of Mattoli, mostly women and college students, the workshop participants learnt that the radio station and its services are highly esteemed by the people. The various government departments at the central and state level have praised Radio Mattoli for its service to the people of Waynad. Fr Jaise Baby, Assistant Director said Radio Mattoli has been a major instrument of transformation in the district as it has helped to change the mindset of people towards education and development.
CBCI Office for Social Communication has set up a national task force and other mechanisms to assist dioceses interested in starting Community Radio. In July the OSC organised a meeting of the directors of the five church-run Community Radio stations at Kochi. Fr. George Plathottam sdb, Secretary, CBCI-OSC highlighted the growing potential of community radio to promote education, development and empowerment of people.

NFL: Andrew Luck?s School Schedule Could Delay His Pro Career
Andrew Luck waited a year before entering the NFL draft, and he might need to wait a while longer before his professional career gets into full swing. ?Read more after the jump.

Stanford?s academic calendar provides an interesting logistical hurdle for the likely No. 1 overall draft pick. Because Luck is an early entrant into the draft and has not yet graduated, and because his school is on the quarter system, he?ll have to wait until he finishes finals to report. The league confirmed that to NFL Network on Friday morning.
The one exception made under the policy is for a club?s rookie minicamp. The?Indianapolis Colts, who are widely expected to take Luck, have one scheduled for May 4-6.
The real dates to watch are June 12-14, when the Colts have their full-squad minicamp, the last team activity before training camp kicks off in mid-summer. Stanford?s finals are scheduled to be held June 8-13. It is expected that Luck would be ready in time for that minicamp, according to sources. However, his availability for the three organized team activities ? scheduled for May 17, May 24 and June 6 ? would be up in the air.
Luck is taking two classes during Stanford?s spring quarter, and upon their completion will graduate with a degree in architectural design.
Indianapolis has been down this road before, and managed the situation creatively. In 2007, the Colts selected?Anthony Gonzalez, an Ohio State fourth-year junior, with their first-round pick. Ohio State, like Stanford, is on the quarter system, so Gonzalez couldn?t report until mid-June. So then-quarterbackPeyton Manning?went to the receiver, taking it upon himself to drive the three hours to Columbus to teach the rookie the offense.
The Colts have not yet publicly committed to taking Luck, insisting that Robert Griffin III is still under consideration by the club?s new brass, headed by general manager Ryan Grigson and coach Chuck Pagano.
The team can sign Luck, or Griffin, at any point between now and the draft.

When and Where: The Women's Kirin Challenge Cup match between the United States and Japan kicks off in the Yurtec Stadium in Sendai City, Japan, on Sunday at 6.30 a.m. EDT. A live stream will be available on ESPN3. Coverage will also be on ESPN2.
Preview: The U.S. Women's National Team will play the first of its two matches in the inaugural Kirin Challenge Cup.
Joining the United States and Japan in the three-team tournament is Brazil.
But it is the opening match that will capture much of the imagination, featuring as it does a rematch of the teams in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup Final.
Famously, on that occasion, Japan scored a massive upset by beating the United States on penalties, after it had twice come from behind in dramatic fashion.
The two sides have met again since then, at the 2012 Algarve Cup. Once again, it was Japan coming out on top, inflicting its first regulation-time loss on the United States, 1-0.

"We have something to prove every time we play Japan," said U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, according to the Associated Press.
Midfielder Carli Lloyd also spoke before the match of the value of this exhibition tournament, as well as the team's desire to set the record straight against the hosts.
"Any time we get to play top teams, it's always valuable," Lloyd said, according to the U.S. Soccer website. "The more quality teams we can play, the better off we will be heading into the Olympics.
"We've lost to Japan the last two times we've played them, and playing them in Japan is going to be a huge match. As a team, there are some things we need to work on, but we can't get better unless we play great teams.
"We don't get these opportunities too often so we have to embrace them and try to accomplish the things we need to do before we get to London."
The match also has extra significance for U.S. coach Sundhage, who will be taking charge of her 93rd game, ranking her third on the list of most U.S. Women's National Team games coached.
As well as giving the U.S. players necessary experience at the top level, the games also will present an opportunity for Sundhage to get a clearer idea of the squad she will be taking to the Summer Olympics.
Sundhage has named the same 23-women squad that went to the Algarve Cup in Portugal this year, but with only 18 players able to make the trip to London, competition for places will be fierce.
"We are ready and well," Sundhage said, according to AP. "I don't think we are as well connected as we will be for the Olympics. We are building up for that."
The U.S. attack will be led by Alex Morgan, who has already hit the back of the net 11 times in just nine matches for the national team this year. Morgan recently joined national team compatriot Hope Solo on the Seattle Sounders roster.
Japan will be without its star player -- and the FIFA Women's Player of the Year -- Homare Sawa. But coach Norio Sasaki is still eager to make the most of the two matches before heading to London.
"This is a really important chance for us to beat the United States and Brazil ahead of the Olympics," he said, according to AP. "They are both great teams."
